I have never written a sports news article before this, so I was quite nervous when I submitted this for critique. Nonetheless, the person who critiqued this (Dang), found that it was a good first effort for someone like me who’s never written sports before. She said the links were quite appropriate, except for the Kirk Long one. Actually, it was hard to find a good link for Kirk Long, because almost all the articles written for him in magazines don’t have soft copies online. Anyway, a big criticism I had for this article was also the ‘bias’ some people gathered for Ateneo, though personally it was just me stating facts.

MANILA, Philippines — The Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) Blue Eagles mercilessly manhandled the Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws and snatched Game 1 of the UAAP men’s basketball finals with a staggering 72-49 finish on Saturday, September 25 at the Araneta Coliseum.

The expected epic battle seemed to be a mismatch as the Tamaraws’ poor performance failed to shake the Blue Eagles. Defending champion AdMU showed FEU and the energetic crowd “One Big Fight” with their calculated offense and unbeatable defense.

The Blue Eagles started off with an 18-point lead from the first quarter, 26-8, and maintained the wide gap in scores until the end of the game. FEU attempted to regain composure on the 2nd quarter, but the Blue Eagles did not let their guard down and widened the gap to 21 points, 42-21.

AdMU had a total of 15 fast-break points for the entire game. Kirk Long, whose newly dyed hair seemed to be a lucky charm for the Blue Eagles, led the game with 14 points on 4-of-4 field goal shooting and 5 rebounds.

This is the third consecutive year that AdMU made it to the finals, proving that it won’t be easy for FEU to snag the championship crown.

FEU can only hope to make it even by winning the Game 2 of the best-of-3 finals scheduled on Thursday (Sept. 30).

The scores:

AdMU (72) – Long 14, Chua 13, Salva 10, Monfort 9, Austria 8, Salamat 8, Erram 4, Gonzaga 2, Golla 2, Buenafe 2, Tiongson 0, Dela Cruz 0

FEU (49) – Garcia 11, Romeo 10, Cervantes 7, Noundou 6, Ramos 6, Cawaling 3, Exciminiano 2, Cruz 2, Bringas 2, Guerrero 0, Mendoza 0, Knuttel 0, Sanga 0

Quarterscores: 26 – 8; 42 – 21; 60 – 38; 72 – 49
